Why Coaching?

You may be asking yourself, is coaching right for me and is it worth the investment of my time and money? Only you can answer that question, but here are some things to consider.

A 2004 study by Manchester Consulting (now Right Management Consultants) found that executive coaching delivers a return on investment of nearly six times the initial cost of coaching. The study results demonstrate what we’ve known for some time - that coaching can have a dramatic impact on personal behavior, leadership effectiveness and business performance.

Some of the more common reasons to work with a coach are to:

The only prerequisite for coaching is a willingness to change. See if you are ready for coaching by taking a self-assessment.

Beyond Training

“Training without coaching is merely entertainment.” Dave Buck

True learning and development require more than attending a training class. Training is important, but it should not be confused with learning. Training is an event. Learning is a process.

When you attend a training class, you are introduced to new skills and concepts or reminded of something you have heard before but didn’t retain. The real learning takes place in the days, weeks, and months after the training event is over.

A 1997 study of 31 public sector managers by Baruch College researchers found that a training program alone increased productivity by 28 percent.  With the addition of follow-up coaching, productivity increased by 88 percent—a remarkable 60 point difference!

The process of coaching locks in the learning and reinforces new behaviors and habits. If you are ready to step up to the next level and move from acceptable to exceptional, try coaching!

Times Have Changed

I remember the advice I got early in my career. It was something like, “The thing to do is get a job with a big, stable company with good benefits and a pension and stay there until your retire.” It was pretty good advice, given the business landscape in the U.S. during the early 1970’s.

I didn’t follow that advice, although I did stay at one company for 17 years. If I had followed the advice I got way back then, it is very likely that I would have been ‘downsized’ by now, leaving me with no job, no pension, and lots of missed opportunities.

Times have definitely changed. I talked with a 20-something recently and he has already had 4 jobs since graduating from college. And, except for his most recent (and short-lived) job at a start-up, these were highly paid engineering jobs at major corporations. Like many smart, ambitious, young professionals, he wants more challenge and more opportunity than these companies were able or willing to provide. Read the rest of this entry »

Encourage Wellness to Reduce Health Care Costs

I rarely watch news programs on TV, so it was serendipitous that I had CNN on this morning as I was eating breakfast. CNN ran a great story with Dr. Sanjay Gupta about a manufacturing plant in Lincoln, Nebraska that is taking a wellness approach to reducing employee health care costs. I am a big proponent of health education, stress reduction, and preventative medicine as a means to improve health status and reduce health care costs. So anytime I see an organization that is spending money on wellness, I get excited. Read the rest of this entry »
